2019 General Synod Delegate Summary:
The Nuclear War Resolution 126
I requested that we remove the word "common sense" from the resolution. Now it says "calling upon policy makers to take policy measures to prevent war by:". I don't have the corrected resolutions. We also added or changed a line in the latter 130's it was a little lengthy but was necessary for clarification. We spoke about our concern for in President have the authority to or in other words called hair trigger. We desire that policy makers take measures to remove all nuclear weapons in the world. We discussed the fact that no one wants to be the first to remove theirs first because they would feel vulnerable and at a great disadvantage.
Summary of my General Synod experience.
My experience was that of the unknown in the beginning. The word Synod was what I grew up with called Convocation after being there that is what it reminded me of from the worship atmosphere. Our assistant pastor had gone and I knew there were debates I was not sure what that looked like until I experienced it. I think the United Church of Christ does great work. The days were long and stressful. I wanted to make sure I was where I was supposed to be when I was supposed to be that. If possible I think it would be great for potential delegates to go with a seasoned person for the delegate's 1st go round. It was emotional because Resolution 8 hit many nerves for folk. I could see both sides but in trying to understand the UCC it was not good not to allow because we disagree when the UCC is an autonomy driven denomination. That being said the UCC for the most part will not kick you out of the denomination because of a disagreement if the desire is not to do harm. I think the app was a bit difficult to navigate and understand what day you were on.
