2021 General Synod Delegate Summary:
Andrea Asselmeier

Synod looked very different this year and I am so thankful for that! While I missed seeing people in person, the parking lot conversations, and hanging out with friends, what stood out to me the most was how very accessible Synod was. One great example of this, that I was excited to take full advantage of, was the Synod workshops! There were dozens of workshops on a very diverse array of topics and I am so thankful to have the opportunity to watch ALL of them. Wow! Doing the workshops in this new way made it possible for me and others to learn so many things from a wonderful diversity of representatives of who we are as the United Church of Christ. Having the workshops in this virtual format allowed me to watch them at my pace, in an atmosphere that is conducive to learning for me, and even to re-watch parts that I needed to hear more than once to have them sink in.

Synod in this new and even challenging way was such a beautiful act of love- to give of what we know and care about so that all may be safe and included at the table. While I look forward to the day that we can safely gather again in person, I hope that we do not miss this opportunity to learn new ways of living out God’s love and being the church.
