2017 Persons In Ministry (PIM) Retreat
Please mark your calendars for the 2017 Persons In Ministry Retreat, September 18-20th at The
Inn at Grand Glaize, 5142 Hwy 54, Osage Beach, MO 65065.
If you are a lay person, please encourage your church to send your pastor to the PIM Retreat. Not only will it be beneficial to your pastor, but the energy, ideas and renewed vitality he/she will bring back to your church is immeasurable.
Please note: This year's PIM Retreat will provide seven hours of continuing education units (CEU's).
This year's theme: Pastoral, Prophetic, Perturbed: Ministry in Turbulent Times
The retreat will help us reflect on the character of our ministry amid the turbulent challenges of the church's institutional challenges and our nation's political and moral drama. When disappointment and discouragement threaten us, what will sustain vibrant pastoral and prophetic ministries? For insight we will draw on the dramatic narrative of Elijah in 1 Kings 19 as well as the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, particularly as found in his books Life Together and Letters and Papers from Prison. Participants in the retreat are encouraged prior to the retreat to reread the Elijah narrative, 1 Kings 17 to 2 Kings 2.14, giving particular attention to 1 Kings 19. Attendees will also profit from reading Life Together. Event brochure.

The leader for our 2017 PIM Retreat is Rev. John Thomas retired recently from the Chicago Theological Seminary where he taught courses on ministry and leadership as well as United Church of Christ History, Theology, and Polity. He also carried a number of administrative responsibilities at the seminary. Prior to his seven years at CTS John served for ten years as the General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ and, prior to that, as the ecumenical officer of the UCC for seven years. Following his own theological education at Yale Divinity School he served parishes in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. John continues to teach courses at CTS as well as assuming occasional preaching and speaking assignments. He volunteers for Arise Chicago, a local faith based non-profit that links the resources of organized labor and the religious community to address the needs of low wage and immigrant workers. He is also on the steering committee of the UCC Palestine Israel Network. John is married to Lydia and has two adult sons who live in Philadelphia. He is a graduate of Gettysburg College and has honorary degrees from Elmhurst College and United and Eden Seminaries.
It promises to be an uplifting, inspirational and truly spiritual event.
